Understanding the Prokaryotes

Definition of prokaryotes:

Prokaryotes are unicellular organisms that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and other organelles. Prokaryotes are the most ancient and abundant form of life on Earth and can be found in almost every environment. Understanding their characteristics and role in various processes is important in fields such as ecology, biotechnology, and medicine.

Characteristics of prokaryotes:

  • Lack of membrane-bound nucleus and other organelles: Prokaryotic cells have a simple structure compared to eukaryotic cells.
  • Presence of a single circular chromosome in the nucleoid region: The genetic material in prokaryotic cells is not contained within a membrane-bound nucleus.
  • Rigid cell wall for support and protection: Many prokaryotes have a rigid cell wall that provides structural support and protects the cell from the environment.

Classification of prokaryotes:

Prokaryotes are classified into two domains based on differences in their cell walls, membrane lipids, and other biochemical characteristics.

Two domains: Archaea and Bacteria

Archaea:

  • Also called as "Extremophiles" found in extreme environments: Archaea are often found in extreme environments, such as hot springs, deep-sea hydrothermal vents, and salt flats.
  • Unique membrane lipids for survival: The membrane lipids of Archaea are more resistant to high temperatures and other environmental stressors than those of Bacteria and eukaryotes.

Bacteria:

  • More diverse and found in a range of environments: Bacteria are much more diverse than Archaea and can be found in a wide range of environments, from the human gut to soil and water.
  • Classified into several phyla based on cell wall structure and DNA sequence: Bacteria are classified into several phyla based on differences in their cell wall structure, DNA sequence, and other characteristics.

Role of prokaryotes in ecology:

  • Nitrogen cycle and carbon cycling: Prokaryotes play an important role in the nitrogen cycle, which is the process by which nitrogen is converted into various forms that can be used by plants and other organisms. They also play a role in carbon cycling, helping to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in the soil.
  • Importance in soil health and plant growth: Prokaryotes in the soil help to decompose organic matter and make nutrients available to plants, contributing to soil health and plant growth.

Industrial applications of prokaryotes:

  • Food production (fermentation): Prokaryotes like bacteria are used to ferment food products such as yogurt, cheese, and pickles.
  • Bioremediation (breakdown of pollutants): Some bacteria can break down pollutants in contaminated soil or water, a process known as bioremediation.
  • Biotechnology (production of enzymes and antibiotics): Prokaryotes are used in biotechnology to produce enzymes and antibiotics.

Pathogenic bacteria:

Examples of diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria: Pathogenic bacteria can cause a wide range of illnesses, from minor infections like strep throat to life-threatening diseases like tuberculosis and meningitis.

Importance of understanding these bacteria for treatment and prevention: Understanding the characteristics and mechanisms of pathogenic bacteria is essential in developing treatments and preventing the spread of disease.

Antibiotic resistance:

  • Mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in bacteria: Bacteria can develop resistance to antibiotics through various mechanisms such as mutation, transfer of resistance genes through plasmids or transposons, and biofilm formation.
  • Importance of responsible use of antibiotics: The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a significant public health threat, and responsible use of antibiotics is crucial in reducing the risk of resistance development.

Conclusion:

  • Prokaryotes are unicellular organisms that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and other organelles, and are classified into two domains: Archaea and Bacteria.
  • They play important roles in ecology, biotechnology, and medicine, and are essential in understanding the diversity of life on Earth.

Union Budget 2023: Relief in Taxes and its Impact on the Economy

It is possible for the government to provide relief in taxes as part of the Union Budget. The government may choose to do this in order to boost consumer spending and stimulate economic growth. There are a few ways in which the government can provide relief in taxes, including:

  • Reducing income tax rates:

The government can choose to reduce income tax rates for individuals and businesses, which would leave them with more disposable income and potentially stimulate spending.

  • Increasing tax exemptions and deductions:

The government can increase the amount of tax exemptions and deductions that individuals and businesses can claim, which can also reduce their overall tax burden.

  • Reducing Goods and Service Tax (GST) rates:

The government can reduce GST rates on certain goods and services, which would make them more affordable for consumers and potentially stimulate demand.

  •  Providing tax credits:

The government can provide tax credits to individuals and businesses for certain activities, such as investing in renewable energy or hiring new employees.

However, it is important to note that providing relief in taxes can also reduce the government's revenue, which may impact their ability to fund social welfare schemes and other development projects. It can lead to an increase in government debt and inflation, which can have negative long-term consequences for the economy. So, it's a balance that the government needs to strike, between providing relief in taxes and maintaining the financial stability.

Received Dr. Sanjay Kapoor (AICF President)

Opening ceremony:

On the opening ceremony I escorted the players and delegates from Netherland, Croatia, Greece and Spain to Jawaharlal Nehru indoor stadium, Chennai. There we enjoyed the cultural events followed by speeches of Thiru Siva. V. Meyyanathan (Tamilnadu Sports Minister), Shri Anurag Thakur(Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports of India), Arkady Dvorkovich(FIDE President), Thiru M. K. Stalin(Chief Minister of Tamilnadu), Shri Narendra Modi (Prime Minister of India).

During Game Days:

For next three days, I transferred plyers from Gokulam Park Sabari hotel to venue and bring them back to hotel. I coordinated with team members and P. Anitha(MVI) if everyone returned to the hotel safely or not. During the playing hours, I used to roam in expo area or activity area and rarely in food court. In front of food court, there was an open stage where India Rocks cultural festival was taking place sponsored by Tamilnadu tourism. There was a giant chess board which was a centre of attraction.

When I joined to venue team:

I worked at venue by helping in setting players’ card, putting match pairings on to the notice board. Then I worked at store room where we packed chess sets, souvenir bags and helped in doing tally of the products. Before the last round of the olympiad, a group picture of volunteers was taken. I got to know that I have night shift airport duty for departure of players. So I visited the venue for the last time as I can’t attend the closing ceremony.

On departure duty:

On 9th August, I was sent to domestic airport for departure of players. But there were more players at international terminal. So, we were called by Prateek sir to international terminal. We were giving instructions to players that they should be ready with their passports and tickets.

Next day scene at domestic airport:

There was long que of players at departure gate. S. L. Narayanan to me: “I am S. L. Narayanan and was playing for India team A at the chess olympiad. I am getting late to my flight. Please help me to get in.” He could have entered the que. Although he is one of the top chess players in India, he introduced himself and requested to get in. Such a man with simplicity. He entered the airport. Then Hari and Arjun came. We took a selfie with them.

Major Difficulties faced :

Sometimes we were in trouble due to lack of information such as unexpected arrivals and unexpected departures. Sometimes we lacked manpower as some volunteers got fever and their replacement was not done. Sometimes we have to do overduty if replacement team was not able to reach on time. After the opening ceremony, I was unable to find a lady player from Spain whom I escorted to the programme. Finding a person in the footfall of thousands was the major challenge I faced. However, I tried my level best to accomplish the assigned duties. Although I am an introvert person, I made some good friends there. I have taken fond memories from the olympiad.

I left Chennai on 11th August and seven days later I got a sum of 18,068₹(Stipend 10k + Bonus 5k + Traveling expenses) into my bank account. I learned to adopt to new teams and working environments. I interacted with many players while traveling. Everyone was praising about the event. In the very short time, India evolved as the best chess olympiad host country. This is really once in a lifetime experience for me.

Bird watching and Sanctuary visit

 Dt-23/12/2021

Today Wildlife Institute of India organized a bird watching and identification of visiting birds to Hirakud dam.  It's aim was to create interest in biodiversity assessment research among post graduate students. I participated in the programme along with my friends. Four interns from Wildlife Institute were first introduced us about bird watching. They are expert in their respective fields (flora, fauna, insects, reptiles). They shared their experiences of working in wildlife projects. They explained how some species work as environmental indicators, how birds migrate from one place to another(feeding and breeding), how some species migrate away from places with high human activities, how can we evaluate environmental condition of a particular area and mitigate the condition for proper functioning of the ecosystem. We discussed how dams and barrages are important for us.

Then we went to Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary. This is the first time I visited a wildlife sanctuary. First they took us to visitors' orientation centre. There we watched some videos about the sanctuary and at last a video on rules and regulations of the sanctuary. Then we went for a jungle walk. They divided us into three groups. In our group, we were 14 students, a guide assisted by two rangers.

Our guide is working on butterflies. He explained about the butteeflies we saw and how butterflies work as an environmental indicator. Their colours help them to dodge their predators. He described how wild animals counting is done. We saw poop of many wild animals.

Poop of hyena (pen or coin is used to know size)
We walked 4-5 km and reached nature camp where visitors reside. Here boating facilities are available. After spending some time we returned to the main gate by bus. Our group has not encountered with any wild animal. We spent about three hours in jungle. We have not entered deep into the forest as we have limited time. However we got to know about many things. I memorized a line shown in an orientation video,  "Leave your footprints and go with memories ".

Examination Fear

Today's experience at examination hall :

My midterm examination is going on. Today I was having my developmental biology paper. I reached exam hall just before it started. I found everybody sitting in their respective places. I took my seat and filled my credentials in answer sheet. Then we got questions. I felt like I knew nothing. I watched the questions for about ten minutes. I was not getting response from the brain. Scientific words were disappeared from my mind. However I started writing like hitting around the bush. Unnecessary thoughts about the result day were distracting me to concentrate on the paper. The exam ended like a bad dream. After exam I discussed some questions and found wrong. I felt guilty and came back to room. I have done my part and now I have to be ready to hear from the teacher. I have to balance myself. So I started to recall some good thoughts. There is a saying "this too shall pass". It helped me to get rid of the situation for some time. Sorrow decreases when it is shared with others. But it will take some more time to heal myself.

I think it is a common psychological behavior and shown by all at certain time. We can minimize its expression but it's difficult to fully suppress it.

Observable symptoms :

- Sweating

- Increased heart beat

- Nervousness

- Vibration in the body

Reading thoroughly everything just before the exam leads to a mixture of everything in the mind. Lack of proper preparation is a major cause behind it. It get worsen by overthinking about results during the exam. It is easy to come in a rank. But it is difficult to be consistent in that position.

In my childhood, I used to worry about good marks. After 12th, I tried to cross the 50% marks. And now in PG, I bother only about passing the exams. However I am still struggling to improve.

And inviting you all to the comment box, share how you cope with the exam fear.

Regards

The Realities of Being an Entrepreneur

I feel I am seeing a set of dreamers who have urge to do something for the society.

Entrepreneurship is not for weak hearted. You need to give up many things to being an entrepreneur. Great entrepreneurs give up great jobs.

Some questions you must ask yourself before choosing this path:

a) What you want to disrupt ?

b) Why you want to disrupt?

c) Why you are the right person for this?

To be an entrepreneur you need to be a team player. You have to unite a team of finance, governance, salesperson, etc. You need a capital to jump in to the market. Your consumer base should be defined.

Entrepreneurs are driven by passion. They learn always and try to implement ideas in their company. They have faced many obstacles and their ideas failed many times. But these obstacles play the role of barriers. If there's no barrier, then it's easy to copy an idea and implement it to make money.

Money is the outcome of the product or service. Entrepreneurs' sole aim is not just running behind the money. If you have a burning desire to be an entrepreneur, then find a gap and then address the gap. There is no full proof procedure to become an entrepreneur. You have to make your own path and go on.

Wishing you all the best
